• EWE: Amundsen Concept (2019)

  • Reshaping the future of household energy use with a revolutionary concept app

  • Visual Design, Concept Work

  • Project Background

  • I collaborated with SinnerSchrader for 6 weeks on a project for their client, EWE, a major utility company in Germany. They approached us to conceptualise a 'home health' app, which would be presented to other European energy suppliers during an investor roadshow.

As part of a diverse team, my role was to develop the app's style and user interface, showcasing this in a number of use cases. We started from scratch, using the existing 'Enera' app as a foundation.

Enera, owned by EWE, offers hardware that can be installed in a home's electrical panel. It provides insights into energy usage and home activity through iOS and Android applications. Users can track their real-time electricity consumption, compare energy usage, and receive tips to lower electricity costs.

However, users had trouble quickly understanding the information in the app due to the cumbersome interface. The app could also give more useful data, such as indicating if anyone was home, monitoring specific lights, and assessing the efficiency of electrical appliances. EWE aimed to monetize this data, which influenced the development of future use cases.

  • Design Process

  • We began by gathering different references in the form of mood boards (see here and here), which served as a foundation for our ideas and concepts. We presented various styles to EWE and proceeded to sketch initial ideas for the enhanced app.

Our goal was to create a visually-oriented style that allowed users to quickly understand their energy usage in real time. We had the freedom to redesign the visual style without being constrained by existing style guides or design systems.

Beginning the design process on paper encouraged creative thinking, and the simplicity of sketches facilitated productive discussions between EWE and the design team in the early stages of the project

  • After discussing with EWE, we transitioned to developing our ideas digitally and presented a wide range of styles for the app's home screen:

  • Following some deliberation and persuasion, EWE opted to proceed with a more abstract visual direction, which stemmed from the generative design approaches we investigated in the earlier stages of our research.

It was then necessary for the design team to define a practical functionality of what was quickly dubbed as "Home Pulse" feature.

Our concept, was that this pulse could intuitively represent the user's home state with color highlights for urgent tasks and movement reflecting the energy situation. The concept app was subsequently named "Amundsen" per the client's request.

  • Introducting Amundsen

  • The app focuses on presenting tasks instead of numbers and graphs, making it easy for users to take action with a simple tap. The most important tasks are prominently displayed at the top, while all devices and topics are listed below.

We collaborated with our client to define and visualise use cases for the roadshow presentation. These use cases not only highlighted the app's capabilities and business significance but also provided insights for further product development. Included below are some visualised animations from the use cases.

  • Use Cases

  • Project Impact

  • The concept app design and use cases were extremely well received by partners at EWE and were subsequently presented to potential investors in a roadshow shortly after.

Additional funding was secured, and this work became the catalyst for another project for EWE that was also won by SinnerSchrader aimed at making this vision a reality.

  • "The progressive design concept and compelling business scenarios sparked investors’ imaginations about the potential of leveraging a relatively new technology and using the power of design to turn it into a outstanding experience for customers."
